1. You cannot answer the phone
This is the most common one by a distance. Tree enquiries are urgent and the caller is ringing several businesses. If your phone goes to voicemail while you are on the tools, a paid lead is money spent handing a customer to your competitor.
Fix it first. Either put someone on the phone, or automate it with an AI receptionist, or accept that paid leads are not for you yet. No supplier can solve this from their side.
2. Your close rate on warm enquiries is poor
If fewer than one in five people who ring you for a quote become customers, the problem is in your quoting and follow-up, not your lead volume. More leads will multiply an existing leak.
Work out your real figure using what a tree service lead is worth before you spend anything. If the number is low, spend the next quarter on faster quotes and proper follow-up instead. That costs nothing and improves the return on every dollar you spend later.
3. You are already at capacity
If you are turning work away or quoting six weeks out, you do not have a demand problem. Buying more enquiries will produce annoyed callers and poor reviews. Put your prices up instead and see what happens to the diary — it is the cheapest experiment in business.
4. Your territory does not have the search volume
Paid channels need demand to convert. In small regional markets there may simply not be enough monthly searches for tree work to sustain a campaign, and no amount of clever targeting creates searchers who do not exist.
We check this before quoting and decline territories that cannot support the spend. The better play in thin markets is relationships — agents, property managers, builders, councils and insurers — covered in how to get tree removal leads. The territories page explains how we assess a market.
5. You want an asset rather than a tap
Bought leads stop the day you stop paying. If your goal is a business worth selling, part of your spend should go into things you keep: your own rankings, your Google Business Profile, your review base and your referral relationships. See SEO for tree services or the DIY route in SEO for tree surgeons and arborists.
Most established operators run both — paid for cash flow now, organic for the business in three years.
6. You cannot fund a proper trial
Lead generation needs eight to twelve weeks to be judged fairly, because tree work is weather-driven and a fortnight tells you nothing. If the budget only stretches to three or four weeks, you will cancel mid-learning and conclude the channel does not work.
Wait, build the budget, and start the free channels in the meantime.
If none of these apply
Then bought leads are probably a reasonable fit, and the next thing to read is buying tree service leads so you know what to check in any supplier's contract, including ours. Our terms are on the lead generation page, the figures are on pricing, and you can contact us or call 0468 062 773 for a straight answer on whether your territory is worth working.
Frequently asked questions
Why would a lead generation agency publish this?
Because clients who buy leads they cannot convert cancel within two months, complain publicly and cost more to service than they ever pay us. Filtering those engagements out at the enquiry stage is straightforwardly good business, and it is a great deal more comfortable than taking money for something that was never going to work.
I already have more work than I can handle. Should I still buy leads?
No. If you are turning work away, your constraint is capacity rather than demand, and the lever available to you is price. Raise your rates until the diary is comfortable. Buying enquiries you cannot service annoys customers, generates poor reviews and wastes money that would be better spent on a second crew.
What should I fix before buying leads?
Answer every call or automate the ones you miss, get a written quote out within twenty-four hours, and know your close rate and average job value. Those three things cost nothing and improve the return on every marketing dollar you ever spend afterwards, whether you buy leads or not.
